According to the Allergy and Asthma Foundation of America, an estimated 50 million Americans suffer from some type of allergies. Chances are, you or someone you know suffers from allergies, whether it be food allergies, seasonal allergies, or another type. While most people with an allergy go to the doctor to be treated, there are many natural remedies to choose from.

It's that time of year again! Headaches, watery or itchy eyes, congested sinuses, and other signs of allergies. The good news is you may not need to take any medications to control your allergy symptoms.

What are allergies:
Allergies are considered to be a type of "bodily reactivity (also known as hypersensitivity.) to an antigen in response to a first exposure", or an "exaggerated or psychological immunological reactions (such as sneezing, itching, difficulty breathing, or skin rashes.) to substances, physical states, or situations." In short, allergies are caused by hypersensitivity of the immune system.

What are the symptoms of allergies?:
While symptoms of allergies vary from person to person, depend on what's causing the allergic reaction, and can vary depending on how severe the allergy is. Common symptoms of allergies include:

-Itchy or tingling sensations on the lips and in the mouth.
-Nausea and vomiting.
-Lightheadedness, dizziness, and in severe cases, loss of consciousness.
-Wheezing, coughing, and trouble breathing. (these are symptoms of asthma that can be triggered by allergies)
-Stuffiness, congestion, and itchy nose.
-Diarrhea and abdominal cramps.

Three natural allergy relief remedies:

1. Eat an anti-inflammatory, alkaline diet.
This includes:
-Garlic
-Green leafy vegetables
-Coconut milk
-Gluten-free flours/grains
-Seeds and Almond Butter
-Lemons
-Probiotic-rich foods

2. Local raw honey
The International Archives of Allergy and Immunology have proven that patients taking honey "reported a 60 percent lower total symptom score, twice as many asymptomatic days, and 70 percent fewer days with severe symptoms." I recommend taking one tablespoon of raw local honey a day. You can do this by stirring some in tea, putting some in your smoothie, or adding some to your oatmeal.

3. Neti Pot
Neti pots are known for being a natural remedy for allergies and many respiratory conditions because they help clear the sinuses and clear up congestion. Use of Neti Pots has been proven to improve quality of life in sufferers of respiratory issues. They also cause little to no side effects!

There are many other natural remedies to choose from! Which will you choose?
