There are many ways you can go about building a treehouse. However, this particular method requires two or three trees (or branches) within close proximity to each other.
Start by choosing the tree or trees. Keep in mind that there are definitely advantages to using more than one tree for your treehouse. For this design, a trunk that splits into three at the base would be ideal. Next, you will need to figure out how high you want to build the treehouse. 9' inch is exciting for children, but not scary. As you go higher, you will need to take more account of tree movement.
Once you have decided on the design, you can begin gathering materials. For this design, you will need:
*8 galvanized rafter ties
*2 8',2×8 pressure treated lumber
*8 galvanized joist hangers
*2 8", 3/4" diameter galvanized lag screws and washers
*Deck screws, nails, and pulley for 1/4" rope
*3 10", 3/4" diameter washers and galvanized lag screws
*6 12', 1×6 pressure treated decking material
*6 8' of 2×6 pressure treated lumber
*3 10' of 2×4 pressure treated lumber
-Tarp roof is optional
Next, find the tools that you need. You will need the bare minimum of power tools and hand tools. Those being:
*Saw
*Level
*Hammer
*Square
*Tape Measure
*Adjustabe Wrench
*Cordless Drill
*Jigsaw
Useful but not critical powertools:
*Table saw
Use this for ripping lumber. While a basic saw will work fine, this is the valuable tool to use.
*Miter saw
Useful for cutting lumber to size.
*Router
Used for rounding edges.
A ladder is important, but a stepladder can work too if you install a rope ladder, stairs, or ladder early into the build.
Here are 4 detailed steps to follow next:
*Step 1: Mount the main supports
Nail a strip of light wood to one of your trees at a height of 1 to 2 feet lower than where you want the floor of your treehouse. You will need to drill 5/8" holes straight into the tree above the strip of wood.
*Step 2: Lay out the Platform
The decking comes with 12' boards, so take this into consideration when you are laying out the dimensions of your treehouse.
*Step 3: Build the Platform
Attach the four 2x6's perpendicular to the others. Screw the other 2x6 to the other end of the platform.
*Step 4: Attach Platforms to Supports
Use the rafter ties to attach your platform to the 2x8's you screwed into the tree. Next, add the joist hangers. Use galvanized nails to attach these, not screws.
Lastly, you will need to follow these final steps:
*Brace the Platform
*Hang a Pulley
*Lay the Deck
*Add an Entranceway
*Railing
*Ladder
*Roof
Following these steps, you will be able to make a perfect little (36 sq ft) treehouse for your children to enjoy!
