broken image

Without a gym membership, many feel lost during the winter. However, there are many ways you can stay in shape aside from a gym membership. While ice hockey and skiing are great sports, they can be costly and require a lot of training. Here are some simple ways that you can stay fit this winter:

  • Stairs

Walking or running up and down the stairs in your apartment building or your house can be a great high-intensity workout. There are a couple of ways you can take this exercise up a notch:

  1. Sprinting a few flights.

  2. Climb two steps at a time.

  3. Do jumping jacks between floors.

  4. Walk the length of the hallway and back before continuing your ascent.

  5. Add walking intervals every few floors.

  • Indoor Sports

It's recommended to join an individual sports program or a team.

There are many options with competition levels ranging from recreational to expert. For example:

  1. Basketball at a local school or community center.

  2. Floor hockey/other team sports.

  3. Aerobic classes or water aerobics.

  4. Dance classes.

  5. Group fitness sessions.

  6. Yoga.

  7. Volleyball.

  8. Zumba classes.

Another tip is to combine workouts. Attend a yoga class right after a game of basketball or Zumba. You should try to make a habit of combining exercises.

  • Active TV Viewing

Another way to stay fit is to incorporate exercise into your daily life. Try skipping or jogging in place while you watch TV. You can also try doing burpees, squats, or push-ups during commercial breaks. Even better, all three!

Or you can do these moves during commercials:

15 seconds of high knees.

15 push-ups.

15 squats.

15 crunches.

  • Dress Code for Winter Workouts

-Base layer

It would be best to wear a breathable shirt that wicks the sweat from your skin. Try to avoid cotton; it holds in moisture and quickly loses its insulating ability. Long-sleeved shirts or a turtleneck would be best for running.

-Middle layer

A fleece or wool top will provide the most insolation.

-Outer layer

Wind and water-resistant jacket. However, it should still be breathable. Nylon is another good option. Don't forget about your hat and gloves, too.
