Tips for Dining Abroad

Add paragraph t

Dining is an important part of your travel experience. How you go about choosing food depends on how adventurous you are. Some people prefer sticking to the "safe" tourist magnet restaurants. Others like to venture outside of the cookie-cutter traditional restaurants. Here are some tips for those who want to experience unique dining without getting too risky.

Ask the locals

Don't get your dining advice from the hotel, resort, or concierge. Speak with locals and ask them where you should eat. They have the best information and know the local cuisine. Do not reference the tourist guides in your hotel. These guides are filled with advertisements and tourist traps.

Hotel-resort restaurants

Restaurants located in your hotel or resort are not off-limits. Once upon a time, these restaurants were considered inferior quality and most travelers avoided them. However, hotels have stepped up their game in this arena. You may not get a unique cuisine, but the food is probably of decent quality.

Etiquette

It is imperative that you know the local dining etiquette. This includes when, where, and how much to tip. Do some research before dining out to learn the local etiquette.

Research

Always research an area before arrival. Some parts of the world have issues with particular foods and water. You need to know if there are certain things you should avoid for your health and safety. Even perfectly safe foods can cause stomach discomfort when you are not accustomed to the food. Keep stomach medication on hand for these unfortunate situations.

Those are just a few tips to help you enjoy your dining experience when traveling overseas.
