Competing in your first triathlon shouldn’t feel like a death sentence. With the right tips, you can complete the race in a respectable time and with a smile.
Get it right from the beginning by positioning yourself well at the beginning of the swim. At the start, first-time athletes tend to get caught up in the flurry of other swimmers’ activity and panic. Steer clear of the chaos that follows diving into the open water. Start off easy and keep calm throughout. Because of their unpredictability, open waters should be practiced in before a race for a better time.
While swimming, sight throughout and do not veer off course. Kick more as you approach the finish, as this delivers more blood to your legs in preparation for the biking.
Leave your bike in the desired gear before starting the race; if the course proceeds uphill, leave your bike in a low gear. Start biking slowly, spinning your legs until you achieve the right cadence. Except when overtaking someone, always cycle on the right-hand side of the course.
The last part of the race will involve running. Coming off a draining bike ride, your feet will feel wobbly, but don’t quit. Keep going until you hit your normal form. Mentally break the distance into smaller segments, mile marker after mile marker, to keep you motivated. Finish strong.
